Alabama's

Urban Agriculture

Rich soil, diverse geography, and a complex river system are just a few things that have made agriculture in Alabama prosper since before the founding of the state. Native Americans and early European settlers lived off of the land and all it had to offer. Crop diversification was a sought-after quality in early America, which brought many farmers to Alabama.

Today, more than 43,000 farms are spread across almost 9 million acres in Alabama. The average size of an Alabama farm is about 206 acres Agriculture is a top industry in the state, and many farmers collaborate with local farmers markets and butcheries to make a profit from their crops and animals.

The Farmers Market Authority is an excellent resource for finding fresh produce and meat across the state. There are so many benefits to eating fresh and local, like helping preserve farms and green space, supporting your community’s economy, and accessing fresh produce with no preservatives—which also leads to great flavor and nutrients!

Community gardens are also a great resource to help people who can’t afford to buy fresh produce. Most are managed by local philanthropists and members of the community. We have made a map below to help you find farmers markets and community gardens near you.

Your body, mind, and local farmers will thank you for shopping close to home.
